Q17 / 75 · JEE Main 2025 (4 Apr Shift 2) · Chemistry
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : Alcohols are formed when alkyl chlorides are treated with aqueous potassium hydroxide by elimination reaction.
Statement (II) : In alcoholic potassium hydroxide, alkyl chlorides form alkenes by abstracting the hydrogen from the $\beta$-carbon.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
Statement (I) : Alcohols are formed when alkyl chlorides are treated with aqueous potassium hydroxide by elimination reaction.
Statement (II) : In alcoholic potassium hydroxide, alkyl chlorides form alkenes by abstracting the hydrogen from the $\beta$-carbon.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- ABoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- Correct answerBStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- CStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- DBoth Statement I and Statement II are correct
Solution
Statement (I) :
$\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{Cl} \xrightarrow{(\text { aq. } \mathrm{KOH})} \mathrm{R}-\mathrm{OH}\left(\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}\right.$ reaction $)$
Statement (II) :

$\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{Cl} \xrightarrow{(\text { aq. } \mathrm{KOH})} \mathrm{R}-\mathrm{OH}\left(\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}\right.$ reaction $)$
Statement (II) :

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
