Q7 / 90 · JEE Main 2022 (26 Jun Shift 1) · Chemistry
Given below are two statements :
Statement I : According to the Ellingham diagram, any metal oxide with higher is more stable than the one with lower .
Statement II : The metal involved in the formation of oxide placed lower in the Ellingham diagram can reduce the oxide of a metal placed higher in the diagram.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below
- ABoth Statement I and Statement II are correct.
- BBoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
- CStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
- Correct answerDStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
Solution
Any metal will reduce the oxide of other metals which lie above it in the Ellingham diagram because the free energy will become more negative by an amount equal to the difference between the two graphs at that particular temperature. So, statement II is correct.
According to the Ellingham diagram, any metal oxide with higher is less stable than the one with lower . So, statement I is incorrect.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
