Gabriel phthalimide synthesis is used in thepreparation of primary amine fromphthalimide,
which of the following reagent isnot used during the process?
which of the following reagent isnot used during the process?
- A\( \mathrm{KOH} \)
- B\( \mathrm{NaOH} \)
- Correct answerC\( \mathrm{HCl} \)
- DAlkyl Halides
Solution
This reaction is used to prepare primary amines. In this reaction, phthalimide is converted it to potassium salt by heating
with alcoholic \( \mathrm{KOH} \). The salt is then treated with alkyl halide to give \( \mathrm{N} \)-alkyl phthalimide, which on alkaline hydrolysis with
aqueous \( \mathrm{NaOH} \) gives a primary amine as the product.

Phthalimide

Phthalic acid Ethyl amine
with alcoholic \( \mathrm{KOH} \). The salt is then treated with alkyl halide to give \( \mathrm{N} \)-alkyl phthalimide, which on alkaline hydrolysis with

Phthalimide

Phthalic acid Ethyl amine
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
