Q19 / 199 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Chemistry · Electrochemistry

From the given standard electrode potentials of two half cells
Fe+++2e-→Fe;Eo=-0.440V
Fe++++3e-→Fe;Eo=-0.036V
Calculate the standard electrode potential (Eo) for
Fe++++e-→Fe++ is

  • Correct answer
    A
    +0.772V
  • B
    –0.404V
  • C
    +0.404V
  • D
    –0.476V

Solution

ΔGo=-nEoF
Fe2++2e-→Fe …..(i)
ΔGo=-2×F×(-0.440V)=0.880F
Fe3++3e-→Fe …..(ii)
ΔGo=-3×F×(-0.036)=0.108F
On subtracting equation (i) from (ii)
Fe3++e-→Fe2+
ΔGo=0.108F-0.880F=-0.772F
Eo for the reaction =-ΔGonF=-(-0.772F)1×F=+0.772V

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
