For the reaction, $\mathrm{NH}_3+\mathrm{OCl}^{-} \longrightarrow \mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{H}_4+\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$ occurring in basic medium, the coefficient of $\mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{H}_4$ in the balanced equation will be

  • Correct answer
    A
    1
  • B
    2
  • C
    3
  • D
    4

Solution

The two half-reactions for the given reaction are $2 \mathrm{NH}_3 \longrightarrow \mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{H}_4+2 \mathrm{H}^{+}+2 e^{-}$ $\mathrm{OCl}^{-}+2 \mathrm{H}^{+}+2 e^{-} \longrightarrow \mathrm{Cl}^{-}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}$ On adding both the reactions, we get $2 \mathrm{NH}_3+\mathrm{OCl}^{-} \longrightarrow \mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{H}_4+\mathrm{Cl}^{-}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}$ The obtained equation is a balanced equation and in it, the coefficient of $\mathrm{N}_2 \mathrm{H}_4$ is 1 .

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
