Q29 / 54 · JEE Advanced 2017 (Paper 1) · Mathematics

For a real number α, if the system 1αα2α1αα2α1 xyz=1-11 of linear equations, has infinitely many solutions, then 1+α+α2=

Correct answer: 1

Solution

Determinant value of 3× 3 matrix should be zero for infinite solution

Δ=0 ⇒   11-α2-αα-α3+α2α2-α2=0

1-α2-α2+α4=0

α2-12=0  ⇒   α= ± 1

But at  α=1, three equations become parallel, so no solution so rejected

at   α=-1, All three equation become

x-y+z=1  (coincident planes), so infinite solution.

∴     1+α+α2=1

Hence, the correct answer is 1.
