Q20 / 90 · JEE Main 2022 (27 Jul Shift 2) · Chemistry

Fe3+ cation gives a prussian blue precipitate on addition of potassium ferrocyanide solution due to the formation of

  • A
    FeH2O62FeCN6
  • B
    Fe2FeCN62
  • C
    Fe3FeOH2CN42
  • Correct answer
    D
    Fe4FeCN63

Solution

Ferric ion forms a prussian blue precipitate due to the formation of Fe4FeCN63 . In this method, to a portion of sodium fusion extract, freshly prepared ferrous sulphate FeSO4 solution is added and warmed. Then about 2 to 3 drops of FeCl3 solution are added and acidified with conc. HCl . The appearance of a prussian blue colour indicates the presence of nitrogen.

FeSO4+2NaOH→FeOH2+Na2SO4

6NaCN+Fe ( OH ) 2 → N a 4 [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] Sodium ferrocyanide +2NaOH

3N a 4 [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ]+4FeC l 3 → F e 4 [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] 3 Ferric ferrocyanide ( prussian blue ) +12NaCl

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
