Q17 / 180 · COMEDK 2017 · Chemistry

Excess of $\mathrm{PCl}_{5}$ reacts with con(c) $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}$ giving

  • A
    chlorosulphonic acid
  • Correct answer
    B
    thionyl chloride
  • C
    sulphuryl chloride
  • D
    sulphurous acid

Solution

Excess of $\mathrm{PCl}_{5}$ reacts with conc. $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}$ to gives thionyl chloride $\left(\mathrm{SO}_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}\right)$, phosphorus oxychloride $\left(\mathrm{POCl}_{3}\right)$ and HCl. $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}+2 \mathrm{PCl}_{5} \longrightarrow \mathrm{SO}_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}+2 \mathrm{POCl}_{3}+2 \mathrm{HCl}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
