Q6 / 161 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Botany · Mineral Nutrition

During N2 fixation in root nodule to form NH3 molecule. How many ATP are consumed?

  • A
    16
  • B
    4
  • C
    2
  • Correct answer
    D
    8

Solution

When nitrogen fixation in plants is done with the help of bacteria then it is called biological nitrogen fixation. It can be represented by the following equation in which one molecule of nitrogen produces two molecules of ammonia at the expense of 16 ATP.

N2+8H+8e+16 ATP→2 Ammonia+H2+16ADP+16Pi

So, only 8 ATP molecules are consumed to form one molecule of ammonia.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
