Consider the wall of a dam to be straight with height H and length L. It holds a lake of water of height hh<H on one side. Let the density of water be ρw Denote the torque about the axis along the bottom length of the wall by τ1. Denote also a similar torque due to the water up to height h/2 and wall length L/2 by τ2. Then, τ1/τ2 (ignore atmospheric pressure) is

  • A
    2
  • B
    4
  • C
    8
  • Correct answer
    D
    16

Solution

Figure

Consider a strip of width dy at a depth h-y below the surface.

Torque on bottom length ( OZ in diagram) due to force of water on strip of width dy is

dτ= Force × Perpendicular distance = Pressure × Area × Distance

dτ=ρgh-y·L·dy·y

So, torque on bottom length due to complete volume of water,

τ1=∫0hLρgh-yy·dy

=Lρg∫0hhy-y2dy

=Lρghy22-y330h

=Lρgh32-h33

or τ1=Lρgh36  ...(i)

and torque due to water upto height h2 and wall length 12, τ2=∫0h2L2ρgh2-yydy

=L2ρghy24-hy330h

=L2ρgh316-h324=Lρgh316×6

So, τ1τ2=16

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
