Q31 / 75 · JEE Main 2020 (03 Sep Shift 1) · Mathematics

Consider the two sets:
A={m∈R: both the roots of x2-(m+1)x+m+4=0 are real } and B=[-3,5)
Which of the following is not true?

  • Correct answer
    A
    A-B=(-∞,-3)∪(5,∞)
  • B
    A∩B={-3}
  • C
    B-A=(-3,5)
  • D
    A∪B=R

Solution

Since both roots are real m+12-4m+4≥0

⇒m2-2m-15≥0⇒m-5m+3≥0

⇒m∈(-∞,-3]∪[5,∞)

⇒A=(-∞,-3]∪[5,∞)

A-B=-∞,-3∪[5,∞)

A∩B=-3

B-A=-3,5

A∪B=R

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
