Q113 / 180 · AIIMS 2014 · Physics

Assertion: The periodic time of a hard spring is less as compared to that of a soft spring. Reason: The periodic time depends upon the spring constant, which is large for hard spring.

  • A
If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
  • Correct answer
    B
If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
  • C
If assertion is true but reason is false.
  • D
If both assertion and reason are false.

Solution

The time period of a oscillating spring is given by, $T=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{m}{k}}$ i.e. $T \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{k}}$. Since the spring constant is large for hard spring, therefore hard spring has a less periodic time as compared to soft spring.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
