Q37 / 180 · AIIMS 2007 · Chemistry
Assertion : Molecular nitrogen is less reactive than molecular oxygen.
Reason : The bond length of \(\mathrm{N}_2\) is shorter than that of oxygen.
- AIf both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
- Correct answerBIf both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
- CIf assertion is true but reason is false.
- DIf both assertion and reason are false.
Solution
Bond order of \(\mathrm{N}_2=3\), bond order of \(\mathrm{O}_2=2\). Higher the bond order, higher is the bond dissociation energy i.e. higher stability or less reactivity. Thus \(\mathrm{N}_2\) is less reactive than \(\mathrm{O}_2\).
Higher the bond order, shorter is the bond length. Higher bond order of \(\mathrm{N}_2\) shows its shorter bond length.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
