Q89 / 180 · AIIMS 2003 · Chemistry

Assertion : Glycosides are hydrolysed in acidic conditions. Reason : Glycosides are acetals.

  • A
If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion
  • B
If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion
  • C
If assertion is true but reason is false
  • Correct answer
    D
If both assertion and reason are false.

Solution

Glycosides are formed by treating glucose with $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}$ in the presence of dry $\mathrm{HCl}$ gas and can be hydrolysed by strong reagents like $\mathrm{HCN}, \mathrm{NH}_2 \mathrm{OH}$ and $\mathrm{C}_6 \mathrm{H}_5 \mathrm{NHNH}_2$. Also, glycosides are known as hemiacetals. Figure

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
