Q58 / 180 · AIIMS 2008 · Chemistry

Assertion : Copper metal gets readily corroded in acidic aqueous solution. Reason : Free energy change for this process is negative.

  • A
If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
  • B
If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
  • C
If assertion is true but reason is false.
  • Correct answer
    D
If both assertion and reason are false.

Solution

Non-oxidising acids $\left(\mathrm{HCl}\right.$ and dil. $\left.\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\right)$ do not have any effect on copper. However they dissolve the metal in presence of air. As it is a nonspontaneous process so, $\Delta G$ can not be $-\mathrm{ve}$.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
