Q18 / 90 · JEE Main 2021 (16 Mar Shift 2) · Chemistry

Arrange the following metal complex/ compounds in the increasing order of spin only magnetic moment. Presume all the three, high spin system.

(Atomic numbers Ce=58, Gd=64 and Eu=63.)

(a) NH42CeNO36

(b) GdNO33 and

(c) EuNO33

  • A
    (b)<(a)<(c)
  • B
    (c)<(a)<(b)
  • C
    (a)<(b)<(c)
  • Correct answer
    D
    (a)<(c)<(b)

Solution

(a) Ce58→Xe4f25 d06 s2

In complex Ce4+→Xe4f05 d06 s0

there is no unpaired electron so μm=0

(b) Gd643+→Xe4f75 d06 s0

contain seven unpaired electrons so, μm=77+2=63 B.M.

(c) Eu633+→Xe544f65d06s0

contain six unpaired electron

so, μm=66+2=48 B.M.

Hence, order of spin only magnetic movement

b>c>a

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
