Q43 / 268 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Physics · Thermodynamics

An inverted bell, lying at the bottom of lake 47.6 m deep, has 50 cm3 of air trapped in it. The bell is brought to the surface of the lake, then the volume of the trapped air will become [atmospheric pressure = 70 cm of Hg and density of Hg=13.6 g cm-3]

  • A
    600 cm3
  • Correct answer
    B
    300 cm3
  • C
    250 cm3
  • D
    200 cm3

Solution

According to Boyle's law, pressure and volume are inversely proportional to each other i.e.  p ∝ 1 v

Figure

⇒P1V1=P2V2

⇒(P0+hρwg)V1=P0V2

⇒V2=(1+hρwgP0)V1

V2=(1+47.6*1*1000*1070*10−2*13.6*1000*10)[As P2=P0=70  cm  of Hg=70*10−2*13.6*1000*10]

⇒V2=1+550 cm3=300 cm3

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
