Q21 / 160 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Physics · Thermodynamics

A vessel contains two non-reactive gases neon (monatomic) and oxygen (diatomic). The ratio of their partial pressures is 3:2. the ratio of number of molecules is

  • Correct answer
    A
    32
  • B
    23
  • C
    13
  • D
    12

Solution

As partial pressure of a gas in a mixture is the pressure it would exert for the same volume and temperature, if it alone occupied the vessel, therefore, for common V and T, P1 and P2 are partial pressures

P1V=μ1RT and P2V=μ2RT

Here, 1 and 2 refer to neon gas and oxygen gas respectively

Now,  P1P2=μ1μ2⇒μ1μ2=32 ( given P1P2=32)
If N1 and N2 are number of molecules of two gases, then
∴  N1N2=μ1μ2=32, where μ1=N1NA and μ2=N2NA

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
