Solution

Let the total distance travelled be $d$ .
Time taken in both part is,
$t_{1} = \frac{(\frac{d}{2})}{v}$ and $t_{2} = \frac{(\frac{d}{2})}{2 v}$ .
Now, average speed can be written as
$v_{a v g} = \frac{d}{t_{1} + t_{2}} = \frac{d}{\frac{d}{2 v} + \frac{d}{4 v}} = \frac{4 v}{3}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
