Q124 / 200 · NEET 2021 · Physics

A uniform conducting wire of length 12a and resistance R is wound up as a current-carrying coil in the shape of,

(i) an equilateral triangle of side a.
(ii) a square of side a.
The magnetic dipole moments of the coil in each case respectively are:

  • Correct answer
    A
    3Ia2 and 3Ia2
  • B
    3Ia2 and Ia2
  • C
    3Ia2 and 4Ia2
  • D
    4Ia2 and 3Ia2

Solution

Area of equilateral triangle of side a,

A=12×a×3a2=34a2

Magnetic moment of each triangle,

m=IA=34a2I

12 a length of wire will form 4 loops of triangle of side a.

Magnetic moment of triangle,

M1=Nm=4×34a2I=3Ia2

Similarly, magnetic moment of square

M2=Nm=3×Ia2

=3Ia2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
