Q79 / 180 · JIPMER 2017 · Chemistry

A solid $A B$ has NaCl structure. If the radius of cation $A^{+}$is 170 pm , then the maximum possible radius of the anion $B^{-}$is

  • A
    397.4 pm
  • B
    347.9 pm
  • C
    210.9 pm
  • Correct answer
    D
    410.6 pm

Solution

For NaCl type structure $\frac{r_{A^{+}}}{r_{B^{-}}}=0.414-0.737$ For maximum possible radius of $B^{-}$ $\begin{aligned} & \frac{r_{A^{+}}}{r_{B^{-}}}=0.414, \frac{170}{r_{B^{-}}}=0.414 \\ & r_{B^{-}}=\frac{170}{0.414}=410.6 \mathrm{pm}\end{aligned}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
