Q4 / 236 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Physics · Magnetic Effects of Current

A short bar magnet placed with its axis at 30o with a uniform external magnetic field of 0.25 T experiences a torque of magnitude equal to 4.5 x 10-2 J. What is the magnitude of magnetic moment of the magnet ?

  • Correct answer
    A
    0.36 J/T
  • B
    0.25 J/T
  • C
    1.65 J/T
  • D
    1.05 J/T

Solution

Given, uniform magnetic field

                        B = 0.25 T

 Figure

The magnitude of torque τ = 4 . 5 × 1 0 - 2 J

Angle between magnetic moment and magnetic field θ = 3 0 o

Torque experienced on a magnet placed in external magnetic field

                       τ = M × B

                        τ = MB  sin  θ       ∵   A × B = AB  sin  θ

             4.5 x 10-2 = M x 0.25 x sin 30o

                       M = 4 . 5 × 1 0 - 2 0 . 2 5 × sin  3 0 o

                          = 4 . 5 × 1 0 - 2 × 2 0 . 2 5 × 1           ∵   sin  3 0 o = 1 2

                            = 0.36 J/T.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
