A resistor of 20Ω and a capacitor are connected in series with an AC current source of 50 Hz. What should be the capacitance to produce a phase difference of 30° between the voltage and current?

  • A
    12πmF
  • Correct answer
    B
    32πmF
  • C
    3mF
  • D
    2πmF

Solution

Capacitive reactance is given by, XC=1ωC
⇒XC=12×π×f×C
⇒XC=12×π×50×C=1100π×C

Impedance of the circuit is given by, Z=R2+XC2  ...1
Power factor is given by, cosϕ=RZ
⇒cos30°=20Z
⇒32=20Z
⇒Z=403 Ω

Using equation 1, we have
⇒R2+XC2=403
⇒R2+XC2=16003
⇒202+XC2=16003
⇒XC2=16003-400=4003
⇒XC=203
⇒C=320×100π
⇒C=32π mF

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
