Q29 / 90 · JEE Main 2016 (09 Apr Online) · Chemistry

A reaction at 1 bar is non-spontaneous at low temperature but becomes spontaneous at high temperature. Identify the correct statement about the reaction among the following:

  • A
∆H is negative while ∆S is positive
  • B
Both ∆H and ∆S are negative
  • C
∆H is positive while ∆S is negative
  • Correct answer
    D
Both ∆H and ∆S are positive

Solution

∆G = ∆H – T∆S (For Spontaneity) (∆G < 0)
So If  ∆H > 0  and  ∆S > 0 for spontaneity then the process is feasible at high temperature and non-feasible at low temperature.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
