Q20 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (29 Jan Shift 1) · Chemistry

“A” obtained by Ostwald's method involving air oxidation of NH3, upon further air oxidation produces “B”. “B” on hydration forms an oxoacid of Nitrogen along with evolution of “A”. The oxoacid also produces “A” and gives positive brown ring test

  • A
    NO2, N2O5
  • B
    NO2, N2O4
  • Correct answer
    C
    NO, NO2
  • D
    N2O3, NO2

Solution

Ostwald's method is based upon catalytic oxidation of NH3 by atmospheric oxygen.

4NH3 (g) +5O2 (g) →500K, 9 barPt/Rh gauge catalyst 4NO (g) (A)+6H2O (g)

Nitric oxide thus formed combines with oxygen giving NO2.

2NO (g) +O2 (g) ⇌ 2NO2 (g)(B)

Nitrogen dioxide so formed, dissolves in water to give HNO3.

3NO2 (g) + H2O (l) → 2HNO3 (aq) + NO (g)

∴ A and B are NO and NO2 respectively.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
