Q105 / 200 · NEET 2003 · Physics

A monkey of mass $20 \mathrm{~kg}$ is holding a vertical rope. The rope will not break when a mass of $25 \mathrm{~kg}$ is suspended from it but will break if the mass exceeds $25 \mathrm{~kg}$. What is the maximum acceleration with which monkey can climb up along the rope?

  • A
    $5 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2$
  • B
    $10 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2$
  • C
    $25 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2$
  • Correct answer
    D
    $2.5 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2$

Solution

Let $T=$ tension in the rope when monkey climb up with an acceleration $a$. Then $T-m g=m a$ $\begin{aligned} & 25 g-20 g=20 a \\ & 5 g=20 a \\ & \Rightarrow a=\frac{5 \times 10}{20}=2.5 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2 \end{aligned}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
