Q134 / 160 · WBJEE 2015 · Physics

A large number of particles are placed around the origin, each at a distance $R$ from the origin. The distance of the centro of mass of the system from the origin is

  • A
    equal to $R$
  • Correct answer
    B
    less than equal to $R$
  • C
    greater than $R$
  • D
    greater than equal to $R$

Solution

As large number of particles is situated at a distance $R$ from the ongin If particles are uniformly distubuted and make a circulat boundary atound the ongm, then centre of mass will be at the ongin While if the patticles are not uniformly distnbuted, then centre of mass will lie between particle and origin. This implies distance between centre of mass and ongin is always less than equal to $R$.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
