A galvanometer may be converted into ammeter or a voltmeter. In which of the following cases the resistance of the devices, so obtained will be largest?

  • A
    Ammeter of range $1 \mathrm{~A}$
  • B
    Ammeter of range $10 \mathrm{~A}$
  • C
    Voltmeter of range $1 \mathrm{~V}$
  • Correct answer
    D
    Voltmeter of range $10 \mathrm{~V}$

Solution

We know that, to convert a galvanometer in ammeter, a very small resistance is connected in parallel, so that equivalent resistance becomes small. Whereas, to convert a galvanometer into voltmeter of greater range, a high resistance is connected in series. $\therefore$ To get high range voltmeter, high resistance is required.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
