Q43 / 60 · JEE Advanced 2015 (Paper 1) · Physics

A bullet is fired vertically upwards with velocity υ from the surface of a spherical planet. When it reaches its maximum height, its acceleration due to the planet's gravity is 14th of its value at the surface of the planet. If the escape velocity from the planet is υesc=υN , then the value of N is (ignore energy loss due to atmosphere)

Correct answer: 2

Solution

Figure
g′=g1+hR2=g4
1+hR=2
h=R ...(i)
So velocity of particle becomes zero at h=R
Given vesc=vN
So 2GMR=vN ...(ii)
Applying conservation of energy
-GMmR+12mv2=-GMm2R+0
On solving
v2=GMR
So v=GMR putting in equation (ii)
2GMR=vN
Comparing N=2

Hence, the correct answer is 2.
