Q123 / 160 · TS EAMCET 2019 (03 May Shift 2) · Physics

A boy runs on a horizontal road with a speed of 4 m s-1 while it is raining. He sees that the rain is making an angle θ with the vertical while running from west to east. However, when he runs from east to west, the angle is α. The rain is pouring down at an angle 45° with the vertical and at a speed of 8 m s-1 as shown in the figure. The ratio tanθtanα is,

  • A
    (1-2)2
  • Correct answer
    B
    (1+2)2
  • C
    (1+2)
  • D
    (2-1)

Solution

Given,

Velocity of boy, vb→=4 m s-1 and

Velocity of rain, vr→=8 m s-1.

Velocity of rain with respect to boy is vrb→=vr→-vb→..

When the boy runs from east to west:

Figure

⇒tanθ=vrsin45°+vbvrcos45°

⇒tanθ=82+482=2+12  ...i

When the boy runs from east to west:

Figure

⇒tanα=vrsin45°-vbvrcos45°

⇒tanα=82-482=2-12  ...ii

From i and ii,

⇒tanθtanα=2+12-1=2+1222-12,

∴tanθtanα=2+12.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
