A body of mass 1 kg is executing simple harmonic motion (SHM). Its displacement y (in cm) at time t given by y=6sin100t+π4cm. Its maximum kinetic energy is

  • A
    1.8 J
  • Correct answer
    B
    18 J
  • C
    180 J
  • D
    0.18 J

Solution

Given that the mass of the particle, m=1 kg and displacement, y=6sin(100t+π/4)

The general equation of SHM is given by

y=Asinωt+ϕ

Where A, ω and ϕ are amplitude, angular frequency and phase difference respectively.

⇒A=6 cm, ω=100 s-1

Now, the velocity of the particle is the rate of change of linear velocity. It means,

v=dydt=Aωcosωt=ωA2-y2

Kinetic energy becomes,

K.E.=12mv2=12mωA2-y22=12mω2A2-y2

For maximum kinetic energy at y=0,

K.E.=12mω2A2-02=12mω2A2⇒K.E.=12×1×1002×61002=18 J

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
