A body cools from 70 °C to 40 °C in 5 minutes. Calculate the time it takes to cool from 60 °C to 30 °C. The temperature of the surroundings is 20 °C.

  • A
    l min.
  • Correct answer
    B
    7 min.
  • C
    6 min.
  • D
    15 min.

Solution

According to Newton's law of cooling, Rate of cooling is directly proportional to the temperature difference between body and surrounding.

dTdt=KT-T0=KTi+Tf2-T0

Where, T=Ti+Tf2 is average temperature of body.

The substitute the value as per first condition

⇒  70-405=K 70+402-20

∴  K=635
As per the second condition,

60-30t=63560+302-20

The time required is given to cool the body from 60° to 30° is given by

⇒ t=30×3525×6=7 min

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
