Q42 / 54 · JEE Advanced 2019 (Paper 2) · Physics

A block of mass 2M is attached to a massless spring with spring-constant k. This block is connected to two other blocks of masses M and 2M using two massless pulleys and strings. The accelerations of the blocks are a1, a2 and a3 as shown in figure. The system is released from rest with the spring in its unstretched state. The maximum extension of the spring is x0. Which of the following option(s) is/are correct?
[ g is the acceleration due to gravity. Neglect friction]
Figure

  • A
    x0=4Mgk
  • B
    When spring achieves an extension of x02 for the first time, the speed of the block connected to the spring is 3gM5k
  • Correct answer
    C
    a2-a1=a1-a3
  • D
    At an extension of x04 of the spring, the magnitude of acceleration of the block connected to the spring is 3g10

Solution

Figure
Using string constraint
a1=a2+a32
⇒2a1=a2+a3
a1-a3=a2-a1⇒C is correct.
for other options use m equivalent
Figure
Equivalent mass
Or Reduced mass
meq=2m1×m2m1+m2 (for a two-mass system)
=22m×m2m+m=4m3
⇒T=4m3.g
∴2T=2.4mg3=8m3g
⇒meq=8m3
Figure
Using mechanical energy conservation
⇒12kx02=8mg3x0
x0=16mg3k⇒A is incorrect
Option B⇒Vx02=Vmax=x02ω=x02k2m+8m3=x023k14m=g3221k
Option D⇒ax04=x04ω2=x043k14m=3kx042m=8g21
For a simple harmonic motion x0⇒ maximum displacement from extreme to extreme
⇒x0=2A⇒A=x02
and ω=km=3k14m
∴vmax=A.ω
and a=ω2.x

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
