ABCD is a rectangular loop made of uniform wire. If AD=BC=2 cm, what is the magnetic force per unit length acting on wire DC due to wire AB if ammeter reads 20 A. (The length of AB and DC are large in comparison with other two sides)
Figure

  • A
    10-1 N m-1
  • B
    10-2 N m-1
  • Correct answer
    C
    10-3 N m-1
  • D
    10-4 N m-1

Solution

The current will divide into two equal parts say each 10 A, then recall the formula of force per unit length in terms of current in each wire is,

FL=μ0i1i22πr,

given, i1=i2=10 A and the value is, r=2×10-2 cm, now put the values in the above formula,
FL=4π×10-7×10×102π×2×10-2=10-3 N m-1.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
